Esperanza Rising

Once there was a girl named Esperanza. She was a very wealthy girl living in Mexico with her Mama, Papa and Abuelita. Esperanza lived in a small town named El Rancho De La Rosas. Her family was the wealthiest of their town and were powerful as well. They were recognized by all the people of the land.

This particular day Esperanza was having her birthday. All the decorations were set and the food were being prepared. The only thing missing was papa. Papa was working in the fields with his friends and Esperanza was waiting for him. Soon mama and Esperanza were getting worried. It was already 2 hours after he normally comes home. Mama ended a party of people to search for him but when they came back they only had two people left. The two people carried a basket behind them. When they arrived they told mama and Esperanza what had happened. Papa was captured by bandits and the search party fought the bandits. They found papa's body on the ground with blood and mostly all of his possessions in his pockets were gone. The bandits took everything and consumed the food he was bringing to the party. Esperanza's father was assassinated. Mama fainted when she heard the news and told everyone to go away.

The next day the mailman came. He said that he was late for the party and had to deliver the papayas Esperanza's father ordered for the party. As soon as the mailman mentioned papa Esperanza burst into tears. She told the mailman about the murder and the mailman prayed her family would be okay.

Soon papa's step brother came unexpectedly. He said that Mama still had to be married to a man and that he would be honored. Mama said no for two reasons. One reason why she said no was because he was wearing all of the items that papa would normally wear and they weren't his. The other reason was because he had a grin on his face and also never cared about Esperanza. Mama said she would think about it because she didn't want to hurt his feelings.

Abuelita said that the only reason he wanted to marry mama was because he was in the election for governor and he knew mama was a powerful woman. If he married mama he would get a better chance of winning the election. Mama  then finally had the courage to tell the man she refused to marry him.

The next day the whole house was destroyed in a fire and each member of the family took something to remember what the felt like living in the house. Esperanza took a doll and Abuelita took her scarf. She damaged her leg while trying to run away from the fire. The whole family knew it was papa's step brother who caused the fire. They knew it was a way for the man to make mama change her mind and so mama agreed to marry the man or so you thought. The family decided that if they wanted to stop the torture they would have to run away. And with that settled the family hid behind trucks and cars and ran away from El Rancho De La Rosas.

Abuelita couldn't come due to her damaged leg and so she stayed with her sisters while everyone else left. They were heading toward California to work in the camps and raise money so that maybe they could bring Abuelita to them while not having to go back to Mexico. The only way to cross the border was by having passports to take the train. Abuelita's sisters created fake passports for the family to cross the border. Esperanza, Mama, the servants, and everyone else coming with them were going to miss Papa and Abuelita.

When they finally reached California they went straight to the camps where they met a bunch of people who showed them around. Mostly half of the people in the camp were talking about strike. They were having strike because they wanted higher wages and more pay so they could feed their children and be a happy family. Esperanza and her family knew that the strike was a bad idea. They also weren't really affected because they were living in different camps and mostly one camp was doing strike. Everyone else was doing there work.

In the camp Esperanza made a bunch of new friends and got to know one of the servants that helped them back in Mexico. In the past Esperanza decided carelessly that she would marry Miguel (The servant that she got to know better). Esperanza met a girl in the camp that was about her age named Isabel. She was Esperanza's new best friend. Mama had a very bad fever. It was called Valley fever. The reason she got the disease is because of the huge dust storm that approached the camp earlier the day. Esperanza felt like she was being cursed. First papa died, second abuelita can't come to California, and third mama had a disease. What else could go wrong.

It was almost Christmas time! Everyone  and a wonderful time or so you thought. Miguel stole all the money that Esperanza had to bring abuelita to California. Then when things looked bad. Miguel came back with abuelita as well. Esperanza thanked Miguel and the whole Family had a

"HAPPILY EVER AFTER"
