This is going to be a first look of a book called “Mr. Popper’s Penguins”, by Richard and Florence Atwater. Although this book is a bit too easy for a kid my age. My dad bought it from NYC (New York City) and it seems pretty fun anyway. If I could give this book a rating it would be 9/10 because the book has around 140 pages which is decent for a kids book and has pictures. Every chapter has its own picture and a title. The only reason I wouldn’t give this book a 10/10 star rating is because the pictures aren’t colored, even though the cover of the book is. However this is just my opinion. Now lets start from the top.
The start of the book when you turn the page are the Contents, but after that its chapter one. Chapter one starts of talking about a town called “Stillwater” and a man named Mr. Popper is walking towards his house. In the next page the picture is very similar to the man in the cover of the book so he must be the main character. On the cover of the book it shows a bunch of penguins and Mr. Popper. It shows him carrying a ladder and pain buckets in his hands. His clothes look dirty too, but he still has a smile in his face as the kids around him look. Then it says that Mr. Popper loves dreaming about going to faraway places and wishes he could’ve gone somewhere first before marrying his wife “Mrs. Popper” and settling down with tow other children.
In the second chapter it says that when Mr. Popper gets home is children are put to bed and he sits on his couch reading a book called, “Antarctic Adventures”. While he reads the books Mrs. Popper comes in the room and asks what book he’s reading. Then she asks why he always reads about the Antarctic and why he likes a place so ugly? Then Mr. Popper counters her back by saying the movie that came out last month showed the Antarctic and it was beautiful. Afterward Mr. Popper says he wishes he could have a pet penguin because he heard they were extremely intelligent.
Suddenly he turns on the radio and listens to a famous explorer by the name of, “Admiral Drake” and gets informed that he will receive a very special surprise. In the third chapter Mr. Popper is awake and already in the next day. The all of a sudden the door answers and an expressman delivers a crate to Mr. Popper. He wonders what it is and finds out that its from Admiral Drake! This excites Mr. Popper so he grabs his hammer and tries to break the crate with all his might. After a couple of swings at it Mr. Popper hears a weird sound coming from inside and feels like he remembers it. So he opens the crate and finds a ………… PENGUIN!
He reacts to the penguin with shock and delight filling up on his face. This has to be the special surprise that Admiral Drake was talking about. With that being said Mr. Popper doesn’t realize that the penguin is already moving around through the house with curiosity. He read in a book that penguins are very curious so this wasn’t very shocking. The penguin practically inspected the whole house. He searched the bedrooms and the kitchen. Mr. Popper thought that it might have been best if the penguin had something cold around it because it used to be in Antarctica. Thats why he grabbed the penguin and put it inside the bathtub with cold water.
