For today's post I want to talk about this book I'm reading called, "I Will Always Write Back". When I first saw the book I really doubted that I would like it because when I scanned through it there were no pictures. I still felt this way when I read the first chapter, but as the story progressed I started find myself being more and more intrigued in it. This book basically talks about the lives of two kids who wrote letters back and forth to each other from opposite sides of the world. The two main characters were Caitlan Alifirenka and Martin Ganda. Now I am going to write about how this story starts and what continues the story.
Before I start writing I found and image that supposedly shows Martin and Caitlan in real life. I don't know wether these are the actually people, but just by looking at the picture I can imagine the two being them. "I Will Always Write Back" is a very emotional story about two kids who grow up writing letters to each other from halfway across the world. It is an amazing story that really shows how different and similar the two are. It all started with a school assignment that Caitlan was given by her teacher. She was told to pick any place around the world and write a letter to an unknown pen pal. This start changed the lives of two people for the better.
Caitlan
An ordinary American girl was sitting in seat as she raised her hand. On the board in front of her there was a list of countries that she had never heard of. She was told to pick one and write a letter to an unknown pen pal. Then after a few weeks she would recieve another letter written back to her. Out of all the names on the board she picked one that was called "Zimbabwe". At that moment she didn't know it, but her decision would change her entire life. The name Zimbabwe sounded exotic, because of that she asked her teacher where it was. Mrs. Miller (teacher) said that it was in Africa. Before this Caitlan didn't really know much about Africa. Sure she saw videos and such but that was about it.
Martin
The teacher entered the class saying that he had pen pal letters from America, these letters were only fr the top students in the class (including Martin). For all Martin and his classmates knew, America was the land of Coco Cola and Wrestling. Everyone in Zimbabwe knew about wrestling and it was very rare to get just a poster or picture of Hulk Hogan. For Martin he wasn't living the greatest life. Sure there were always troubles based on money and food, but in the end his family always got through. Martin was the number one in his class for most of his school years. Only once was he second place and was surprised and happy for the kid in first.
However when he got home his mother heard the news and was very angry. She was overwhelmed by the fact that her son had not gotten first place in this class. She had a serious talk with Martin about school and how if he didn't do perfect he would not get into a university and would have to stay in Zimbabwe barely living off food and hard work. Once he got into a university and graduated he would be able to do whatever he wanted, she said. Martin knew his mother wasn't trying to be mean. She just wanted him to be happy in life and not have to drop out of school like her. That night Martin started working on a reply for Caitlan..........
