As you already know, today there was no school because of the snowstorm. Anyway, when my father came in I showed him the book I read. It was called, "Who Was Abraham Lincoln?". Now I already know that he was the president of the United States of America but not exactly what he did in his life (childhood, before the president, etc). My father insisted that I write about this because he said I didn't "understand it" or "didn't read properly". So that is what this post is going to be about, not even Google News! Now its time to start this summary! Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Kentucky. The cabin was big at all and even had a dirt floor. Let's just say that his family wasn't very rich. But then again, that's practically every famous person's story.
At the age of seven Abraham and his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana. The main reason that they left Kentucky is that it was a slave state. His family despised slavery and hoped it would soon enough. Because of this Abraham said he was just born "Anti-slavery". It's actually pretty funny if you think about it. Besides his hatred of slavery, Abraham was against killing things. When he was still 7 Abraham killed a wild turkey. I wonder how horrifying it must be to see a dead turkey. I mean the closest thing I've seen to the dead (in real life) was a mouse. Unfortunately, at the age of 9, Abraham's mother died and his father needed to go back to Kentucky and find another woman. In the end, he came back to Indiana with a new wife called, "Sarah Bush Johnson". She was a widow (husband left her) and had three children at her side.
Because of Sarah Lincoln had happy memories of his childhood. During this time period there weren't many people and with that, not many schools. However, he was able to find one called, "A, B, C School". They basically just taught you the alphabet. In my opinion, I wouldn't call that a "school". As Abraham got older people in his neighborhood knew him as a joyful and funny person. There wasn't a day where he'd crack a joke in his conversations. After that, he moved over to Springfield, a new state capital at the time. Lincoln decided to become a lawyer at the time and moved from town to town for work and money. However, Lincoln didn't work by himself, instead, he joined a group of lawyers and together they traveled. I feel like of bad for him because whenever there was a river or stream the other lawyers told Lincoln to check and see if it was deep or not (because he was tall).
When I heard that it seemed they were just using him. One day, Lincoln was at a party and met a woman named, "Mary Todd". It seemed as though the two of them were just perfect for each other, Mary seemed to know he was nervous and kept the conversation going when he said nothing. Years later Abraham would joke that he never thought a woman would like him. Together the 2 of them had four children, unfortunately, 1 of them died from illness at an early age. Abraham Lincoln knew about Slavery at that age and hated it, even though he wasn't technically an abolitionist. Soon, Lincoln joined the Republicans who themselves hated Slavery and they nominated him as their candidate for president (I guess I somehow have a newfound respect for the Republicans).
The Democratic parties had candidates but either way, he won the election, Abraham Lincoln was the new president of the U.S.A! At this point, 10 Southern states left "America" and called themselves the "Confederates". Their soldiers fired at Fort Sumter which started a 4 year way called, "The Civil War". Abraham needed good generals but had none. They weren't good enough and he had no experience in battling himself. Thankfully, as time went on he passed a law in which Black slaves that escaped from their Southern slave owners and met the Union could become "free". This was a big step but didn't exactly finish the war. Abraham's first term had ended and he needed to run again for the second time. His opponent was named, "Edward Everett" and had a speech two hours long. However, Abraham's was only two minutes, you might have thought that the president was stupid but no. His words rang in the hearts of the audience. In the end, he his second term and the war ended later on. The North (Republicans) had won and everyone cheered for Abraham Lincoln at the White House. A while later Abraham was with his wife in a theater and got shot by "John Wilkes Booth". He assasinated the president believed that slavery benefited both whites and blacks. The president was mourned the Booth got shot while trying to escape from his hiding place.
