For today's post, I want to talk about "Chains". "Chains" is a book made by "Laurie Halse Anderson", who is also the author of "Fever 1793". I like this book a lot and still haven't even finished it. There's something about it that makes me want to keep on reading but I don't know what. Maybe it's the fact that there is a cliffhanger at the ending of every chapter? Or the nonstop historical context is shown about the "Revolutionary War"? Either today I'm going to be summarizing it and leaving it off at a cliffhanger so that I don't spoil it all for you. Before we start let me give you some information on the author. Laurie was born on October 23, 1961, in New York. The woman attended and finished both high school and college before beginning her writing career. "Chains" has a medal for National Book Award Finalist and the best historical fiction novel.
Summary
The protagonist for Chains is Isabel and her sister is named "Ruth". The two of them were working on a plantation in "Rhode Island" before being sold to a British couple from New York. Isabel tries to prove that she is indeed free due to her previous slave owners will before the woman died but the lawyer carrying the papers left to Brooklyn a while ago. Eventually, she and Ruth arrive at the merchant's house and recognize the feelings in New York for the Revolutionary War. This whole thing happened because of "Britains" and Americans knew that they wanted to have their independence. Let me tell you, from the point of where I am in the book it looks like the British will easily take this victory. However, as we all know the Americans or "Colonists" eventually win. Maybe they'll start talking about the battles the American win at the end of the book or in the next one.
Isabel and Ruth hate the "Locktons" (British couple, mainly the wife, "they call her madam") because they treat them unfairly. Now, of course, all slaves were treated like garbage back then but these few were just outright horrible. The husband is actually a lot better and isn't as mean compared to the "Madam". However, both of them are on the British side. Isabel works as some type of spy for a time because she's been told that the "rebels" or (Colonists) will let Slaves be free if they win. However, soon enough the British start coming to New York and scare the rebels away. At this point, Isabel doesn't know which side to believe in. She has friends like "Curzon" (young black boy) in the American side but when she asked their leader to be freed in exchange for her information he lied.
Not Curzon though, but then again the British don't seem much better telling her that they would've helped Isabel if only she had come from an American family. However, because the people that Isabel works for "Locktons" are Loyalists they can't interfere. Also, something that really makes me think the "Madam" is a bad person is the fact that she sold "Ruth" (Isabel's sister)! Now you probably don't know just how mad Isabel was when she found out. And to also know that her decision isn't worth anything at all. Trust me, Madam and her got into a "scary" battle. Isabel started attacking Madam but the crazy woman threw a portrait of her father at the girl! I just couldn't believe it!
Google News
Okay, so there is this story about a family of "suicide bombers" that I just can't comprehend. What kid would want to kill themselves at such a young age? Am I right? Apparently, in this story, everyone in the family killed themselves by attaching bombs to their bodies and running into people. At least ten people died because of this and there were a ton of injuries. Now, this seems pretty skeptical to me. What if the parents just forced the kids to attach bombs to them? I just can't understand why two kids 9 and 12 would do that. I wouldn't! The reports say that 42 people in all were injuries (not including deaths). The bombings or people seemed to be targeting churches because that's where all the attacks were. Let me know what you think.
