Golden Compass last six chapters Summery

Chapter 18

After rescuing all of the kids that were in the Gobbler’s facility Lyra went into an air balloon with Serafina (the witch) and Lee Scoresby. Lee was the owner of the hot air balloon and Serafina ordered her fellow witches to help move the balloon towards the palace on Svalbard. Roger and Lyra were sitting down and wrapped in furs since it was extremely cold, Lee already had enough clothing for himself and the witches don’t have a concern with the cold. While on the trip Lyra learns that Serafina actually wished to be with Farder Coram when he was still a young man but now she feels as though he will be embarrassed by his age. Suddenly, they are attacked by “Cliff Ghasts” and Lyra falls off the balloon.

Chapter 19

When Lyra wakes up she starts getting really worried for everyone else on the balloon and calls their name. But later on stops since she doesn’t want the cliff ghasts to attack her. Eventually, a giant bear appears out of nowhere and Lyra calls out “Iorek” hoping it was him. But unfortunately for her, it was actually a guard who was protecting the entrance to the palace. She was confronted by the bear and taken inside Svalbard. There, she met one of the other human prisoners beside her, it turned out to be a professor for a different college (not Oxford), and the man said that he was taken into custody because he knew too much information about the bears.

Chapter 20

Lyra finally remembers what she heard in the retiring room back in Oxford College, it seems as though Iofur just wants a daemon even though he’s a bear. Lyra makes a plan by telling Iofur that she is in fact a daemon but her human companion is Iorek. Since Iofur hates Iorek he gets mad. But then Lyra states that she wants to be Iofur’s daemon and if he fights Iofur in a match of single combat. Lyra does this because she knows this is the only way Iorek won’t get immediately shot as soon as he’s in eyesight view of the castle. In the end, they get into a fight and the odds aren’t looking good. But Iorek, is able to pull the clutch and get control of the castle. All the bears respect him and the human prisoners get set free.

Chapter 21

At is at this stage that Lyra asks Iorek to take her to Lord Asriel’s “prison” and Iorek assembles a group of bears to help defend them along the way. In the end, Lyra is glad that Iorek brought these extra bears because they had to fight witches and awarders, which seem to be part of the bear’s training anyway. Finally, when they reached the “prison” Iorek slept outside the door to make sure no one mysterious entered. Roger was also with Lyra and they entered the room. Lord Asriel at first seemed super scared to see Lyra but after noticing that Roger was behind her he relaxed.

Chapter 22

While they were staying in the “prison” Lyra asked her father (Lord Asriel) how he was able to make his prison into a fine home and gather enough materials from around the world (without leaving his room) to create his device. She was just amazed how his power and wealth is still able to help him in jail! Anyway, Lord Asriel explained his plan that he was going to find the source of dust by entering a different world, and that world was only accessible in the Aurora. Lyra was fascinated and said goodbye to Lord Asriel, then she went to sleep.

Chapter 23

In the middle of the night her father’s servant woke her up and looked extremely worried. Then, she knew why, her father had taken Roger and was heading towards the Aurora by himself, he was going to use Roger as a sacrifice for his plan. Lyra wouldn’t let him, and ran as quickly as she could by asking Iorek to help her. They reached him in no time since his sled tracks were still visible. Roger and Lyra’s daemons fought Lord Asriel’s daemon while he was asked Ms. Coulter to join him in his quest to find the source of dust. Ms. Coulter said no and then he left but Lyra knew that she had to follow him and stop whatever he was planning. So after rescuing Roger, she gave him a few kisses and ran off to the Aurora lights entering a new world.
