Did you know that 1/3 of all teenagers are sleep deprived? According to the National Sleep Foundation, you need at least 9 hours, and most of you aren’t even clocking in at 7. Why is that? Fear of Missing Out is one reason, but so is the desire to study hard and do better in school. But guess what? Those extra hours you spend awake studying aren’t really doing much for you, as you’re much less likely to remember what you studied.

Well, according to a website called drugfree.org, when not getting enough sleep, it will cause:
- Poor memory and concentration leads to poor retention and performance at school.
- Response time is impaired and car accidents are more likely.
- Hormones triggering poor food choices and metabolic changes cause weight gain.
- Irritability contributes to family and/or social conflict and can lead to more serious mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
Poor memory loss is mostly caused by stress and sleep because kids go home with a lot of homework. For example, if you have 2 essays for ELA, 3 pages of math, and read 20 pages and do the questions in a book for social studies, of course that is going to keep you up at night because you have so much homework. According to a website called chidmine.org, they say “My 16-year-old daughter is finally entering the homestretch of sophomore year, and she has been chronically sleep deprived since September. The reasons are multiple but when you add together 45 minutes of homework per class per night, plus a few extra-curricular activities, plus the downtime spent everyday watching a John Green video on YouTube or chatting with friends, and a normal amount of procrastination, it adds up to between 5 and 7 hours of sleep on an average school night. Throw in a term paper or heavy exam week and the average can easily drop to 3 or 4.
But, Marcus, isn’t that really okay because the teachers are experts at their subjects so shouldn’t they be doing this stuff for our own good?
Sure, if you want to have the cold or the flu very consistently. Or if you also want to have the lack of learning from all the other students in your class. But sure, teachers are the experts!
Touche.
Usually I would agree with you Abdul, but Marcus does have a point because even though the teachers are experts, all these diseases can have effect on you.
Normally, I would agree with you Lhawrencelie, but Abdul does have a point because the teachers are doing this for our own good.
Are you challenging us!
I think so?
There are some facts here that are about sleep deprivation and a project that me and 3 other kids did for Health Class. We didn't get to present it and honestly that was fine by me because it was pretty cringe. I hope u can learn from this and tell me about what you thought about it!
