For today’s post I’m going to start talking about what happens in this book from the very beginning of the book (first look for people who haven’t see it yet). The book I will talk about is called, “Rules”. I have a feeling this book is very popular because I know I’ve seen it before. The cover of the book shows a fish ad a rubber duck, in case you wanted to know. “Rules” is a 200 page book that is made from “Cynthia Lord”. The book starts off with a girl named Catherine who opens her home’s front door into her first day of summer vacation, and of course its nothing liked she dreamed it would be.
Then she has a little brother by the name of David who is supposed to go to the Clinic. However he wants to go to the video store. As you read further into the book you’ll find out that the clinic is where David takes therapy. Apparently he needs therapy and I’m pretty sure we’ll stick long enough to find out what type of therapy he takes. Catherine’s dad tells Catherine that he’ll pick David and her at 5:00. Then Catherine accidentally says “maybe” and and David shrieks “5:00!”. Apparently David only answers to responses that sound like their sure or confident it’ll happen at the time he wants it to.
Outside Catherine sees some men moving stuff out of a van into the house next door. The reason their doing that is because the old woman who used to live there left with her son into a new apartment attached to his house. Catherine thinks it doesn’t feel right with her old neighbor’s porch empty and bland, but still has her hopes up for a new friend. Ever since her best friend left for California Catherine has been hoping for someone to talk to and play with. Basically do the stuff she used to do with Melissa.
Suddenly their mom comes down the driveway and takes Catherine and David with her. She says that David is going to “Occupational Therapy”, not the video store. This makes David frown, but still keeps quiet. Until Catherine tries to tell him he may be able to go to the video store afterward. David screams as high as his lungs can take him. At the clinic David’s helper takes him to her office where they do the therapy. While Catherine and her mom are waiting she asks her if they could go to “Elliot’s Antiques” at the row of stores opposite to the clinic.
However Catherine’s mom doesn’t want to leave the clinic in case something happens to David. She isn’t really worried about what happens to David. She’s worried about what David may do. With this her mother starts reading a magazine out loud and Catherine gazes at everyone else in the waiting room to see if their glancing at her mom. She wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Around the room all the people are the same as they always are. Mrs. Frost is an old woman who comes for therapy as well. Then there’s another boy named Jason who’s around 5 years old. He is in a wheelchair and can’t stand up or talk. Thats why he needs speech therapy. He is also one of the main characters of this book. Hope you keep on reading to find out how and why.
