As I promised today I will be continuing yesterday's summary of "Island of the Dolphins". Fortunately, I actually finished the book today so I know everything. Anyway, on the previous post, we left off at the part where the women mourned for their brothers, sons, and husband's deaths. The council of the village (Ghalas) decided to name a new chief since Karana's father had died in battle with the Aleuts. The new chief's name was "Kimki" and he made good decisions. The men and the women were satisfied with him as chief, but always remembered the warriors of the village that had died on that fateful day. One day, Kimki decided to travel in a ship towards a distant country. Somewhere Karana's people could be safe from any possible threat.
After 1 or 2 months a ship came ashore the island. one of the few remaining men saw it and reported back to the village. It turned out that ship was sent by Kimki to retrieve the rest of the villagers and take them to where he was. Everyone was overjoyed and started packing. One by one, the men and women boarded the ship, Karana was still waiting for her brother Ramo to come when the ship started moving. She was so terrified of her brother being left on the island, especially when she saw him running through the sand and trying to reach the ship. That was when Karana had to make a decision. Whether to leave her brother and go with her people or jump off the ship and ruin her chances of ever reaching this new place.
Suddenly, Karana forced herself to jump off even with the hands of many women trying to keep her still. When she reached the island Ramo was quietly asking if the ship would come back. Karana said yes but wondered if it was true. Together the two of them walked back to the village and started eating some food. Once Ramo finished eating he headed outside and walked towards a cave. Karana was sleeping when he did this so she had no idea. The next day Karana saw his brothers tracks and followed them into a mysterious cave. That was when she realized that the cave was home to a bunch of wild dogs. You see the men from the fight died the dogs they owned ran wild and were basically stray. Since they had no family the dogs joined a group of strays which ran to the village for food every night.
As Karana approached the cave she saw a circle of dogs just sitting there, and in the middle was Ramo. He was fighting the dogs and was able to kill one before getting bitten in the throat. Karana mourned the death of her brother and swore to get revenge on the dogs for killing him. She decided to start by making weapons, at first she was hesitant because there is was a saying in the village that when a woman makes a weapon it will break in a time of danger. Eventually, she got over it and started making a bow and 5 arrows. Before running towards the cave of the wild dogs Karana tried to make a spear. Fortunately, she had enough resources to make one and headed over to the home of the wild dogs.

Next weekend I'll continue talking about what happens but for now, we have to head over to Google News. I have two posts for today, when is something that most people in the U.S can relate to, the cold. The other is something rather hot... Anyway, let's begin with the "cold" post. From Virginia to Vermont the temperatures are freezing. According to CBS news, 22 people have died from the cold nationwide. There are some places with 18 inches of snow. That's practically your whole leg! Now for the "hot" story, apparently in Australia, there is a city called "Sydney" that is having its hottest day in 79 years! I find that very hard to believe with all the snow in front of my house but then again, they aren't in the U.S! The article defined the heat as "scorching" which I could think is an exaggeration, however, the news doesn't lie!
