I just finished reading 1 hour and 20 minutes worth of reading this new book called, "Kira-Kira". The reason I didn't capitalize the words is because that's how its spelled in the book. This book has a "Newbery Medal" so I'm assuming it's really good. That also means I have high expectations for it. Today's post will be about what I've read so far. Hope you enjoy it! Two sisters named "Katie and Lynn" are born in Iowa. They live in a small rented house and their parents own a Japenese supermarket. Unfortunately, the store goes out of business and the family has no way of making money. That is until the father asks his brother in Georgia for work. Together they find two jobs for both himself and his wife (Katie and Lynn's mother).

Katie does not understand why they have to leave Iowa. However, her older sister Lynn explains it to her. So while the father's brother comes with his truck to pick up the family Lynn and Katie have their last moments in Iowa. The next day Katie and Lynn get inside their uncle's truck to go to Georgia. On the way, both sisters have fun playing with their uncle and enjoy his funny personality. They play games like chess and sing songs about one another. After the drive to Georgie is finished Katie's family and her uncle's family (father's brother) have a welcoming party! Then both parents start working to raise up money for a house. Katie and Lynn start school, though Lynn gets straight A's and Katie doesn't she admires her sister.

Four years later, Lynn starts growing up while Katie stays the same. One day, both sisters were playing dodgeball when Lynn gets hit in the chest with the ball. She grows dizzy and has to be taken home. The next day Lynn tells her sister to mind her own business because she is sick for the day. Katie feels disrespected and waits for her to apologize (never does). Katie is now 11 years old and Lynn is 14. They have grown a bit more mature, Lynn starts making friends and has grown likable to most kids. However, Katie is the same person and gains no friends. Lynn and her new friend Amber want to go camping but not for the reason you think. It's because they want to meet up with two boys from their class.

Lynn wants the whole family to come along so it looks more authentic. Katie's mother and father couldn't participate because they have to work but her Uncle will always take a chance to go camping. Though it can't just be Lynn, Amber, Katie, and her uncle. That's why her uncle's family comes along as well (two boys and a wife)! Unfortunately, while making a fire Katie had accidentally thrown a match onto one of the tents. This caused it to burn completely. Katie and the uncle's two boys try to cover up the evidence but without succession. So Katie's uncle has to buy a new tent, finally, the two girls get their chance to meet up with the boys. Lynn and Amber head over to their campfire and actually kiss one of the boys. When Katie feels alone, Lynn notices that and invites Katie to hang out with her and Amber.

That is all I've read so far. It seems pretty good so far, at first I didn't think I'd like this book because the cover wasn't the most interesting. However, now I know not to ever judge a book by its cover. For today's story, I am going back to a topic that is very serious. Remember the "Las Vegas Shooting"? Well, the police are still doing research and have found fingerprints on the guns of the shooter. Guess who's fingerprints they were? The shooter's girlfriend! She told the police a while back that her fingerprints were "probably" on the ammunition of the guns. Turns out she was right! Which means she must have been connected to this shooting in some way, even if she wasn't in Las Vegas during the shooting. I'll find more on the story next time!
