After the incident where the man cries he continues peeling potatoes as that is his job in the house and lets the boy sit on the table while they wait for his mother. When the woman finally comes she stares at the man with almost a form of disgust but the man doesn't stop to look up. Instead, he continues with his forced job as the woman tells Bruno to go back upstairs and rest. Then, before she leaves the kitchen she tells the old man thank you and hurries off to the other room.
The man is hit with chock as a German would actually be nice to him besides the little kid and goes back to being silent. As the movie proceeds the wife finally discovers that at the concentration camp they are actually killing Jews and that is where the smoke comes from. Kotler, the solider that lives there to help Ralf (father) and protect the family is the one that tells her not knowing that she doesn't know. Later on, Kotler gets in trouble because Ralf's is extremely displeased with this and is mad at her husband for not tell her.
Later on, Bruno finds a little exit in one of the little storage rooms in the backyard which by the way, he isn't supposed to be at and is actually able to see the concentration camp. From here, he isn't inside of the camp but right outside of the barriers and sees a little boy whose named is, "Shmuel" and this boy is a Jew that also doesn't exactly understand how the camp works. He just knows that this isn't a game and that people are actually dying. He had a number that the soldiers gave everyone on their uniforms and knows that he is supposed to be helping build the new hut.
But since he wants peace and quiet he goes to the far right of the little courtyard and uses some of the rocks which are bigger than him as cover. The only way he gets away with this is by carrying a cart from the distance to and from his little hideout. When the soldiers ring a bell he is supposed to go back and cannot continue hiding, otherwise they will notice that he is gone and probably kill him. I feel very bad for the boy and many of the other kids in my class feel so too.
Shmuel and Bruno become friends and talk to each other about the camp. They both know that although they are from opposite sides of the war they can still be friends. Okay... I take that back, they don't know that there is even a war but become friends either way. Shmuel asks for food but Bruno doesn't have any and then he is forced to go back to the courtyard where the entrance to the camps are because one of the soldiers rang the bell. Bruno says goodbye and then hurries off home so he doesn't get caught, but remembers to bring food next time.
