I was watching a movie today called, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" and it was so sad, the reason that I was watching it with my class is because we are still talking about the Holocaust in my ELA class. You might wonder why we're learning about the Holocaust in English and to be honest I don't know but it makes for an interesting topic and we actually watch interesting movies about it like this one. So basically this movie talks about a boy named Bruno who is apparently who enjoys his time in town with his friends by pretending to be airplanes and running across the courtyard and streets.

This is their way of having fun, that is until Bruno's father says that he and their family are going to be traveling to a new location. Bruno starts to complain but the mothers tries to comfort him by saying that the new house will have a garden and lots of friends for him to play. He says goodbye to his friends as him and his family start to drive towards the new house with the help of German officials. Just for some more context/background information for you. The dad is a very high Nazi official that works to help "bring peace and prosperity to the country" even though in reality they are just killing the Jews and not realizing that they are the problem.

Of course, Bruno is still only 8 years old so he doesn't understand anything about the history between the Jews and Germans, and why they hate the Jews much. That is until, when they move into the new house that Bruno starts to realize the bad things that are happening around him and that things are not going to be good for the Jews. This is the first step to him losing his innocence.

While in this predicament he knows that there is a Jew that helps in the house and his name is, "Pavel" and the man is very old. One of the soldiers that lives in the house alongside the family to protect them has the name of Kotler and one day he yelled at the old man to Bruno's surprise and ordered that the guy made sure that Bruno would get whatever tire that he wanted and that he would pick up the tire and carry it all the way back into the front yard so that he could make a swing.

Sooner than later Bruno gets hurt by falling off of the swing and Pavel comes and helps fix his little cut. Then, Bruno asks Pavel why he is a farmer and the man answers by saying that he used to be a doctor and was practicing medicine. Bruno insults him by saying he must not have been good if he was only practicing medicine, however it wasn't intentionally meant to be mean so the old man wasn't taken by offense. Instead he started crying and laughing because of his old life and wished the Nazi's had never done what they had done. This is the part of the movie that makes me really sad and then we stopped watching.
