In Grandpa's House (book) review. Author: Philip Sendak
One day there was a little boy who lived with his mother and father. He was the third out of the five children in his family. Where he was born he listened to people saying that there were ghosts living from the dead in the cemetery so whenever his school walked somewhere near the cemetery they carried a flashlight and teachers went along with them (Guidance Councilor). His father was the president or mayor of their town. One day a man was preaching against a group of men. The little boy's father supported these men and was trying to persuade the man to resign with them. The man got angry and said before he left he said that this town will never have the joy of all it's children again.
Right after the man left the little boy's sister died. He also got a disease that spread through his 3 brothers and last sister. The little boy's mom asked his father if they could invite him over to lift the curse from their town, but his father replied with a no. Instead the family moved to another town where the little boy's grandfather lives.
There he grew up a bit and would always skate in the pond behind their house. Soon he met a girl who skated with him named Khaytcha. They both fell in love with each other and then Khaytcha moved to America. The little boy was now a man now and he made his own decisions.
The man later then finally made a decision to go to America. He begged his father to give him money to go to America but he said no. Then his father's father pleaded with the man his father agreed. By the time the man got to America Khaytcha was already married with another man. This hurt the man and he decided to go and work in the railroad. soon he met a new woman and the got a marriage license. Soon he and his wife had children.
Sooner or later the man became of age. He grew all the way to seventy when his wife died. His children tried to cheer him up and finally one of them decided to ask the man to make a children's story. For once the man thought this was a stupid idea because of the fact that he was a fully grown adult and higher for all I know, but he wanted to make his child happy so he told them a story.
DAVID
Once upon a time their was a little boy named David. He finished school and was coming back when he entered his house. The house was empty with no one there. David cried for hours until he saw something. A huge bird. it said that it was here to help you. So the boy went on top of the bird and they pulled into the sky. The huge bird asked him where he wanted to go and David said he wanted to find his parents. With that they took off.
After that the huge bird told David all the creatures that lived in the other side of the mountain. Soon the monsters attacked and the huge bird called all good giants to defend. The monster were defeated and turned smaller. They thanked everyone and said that they never wanted to be monsters but they kept on eating all because when they were little they never got to eat as much as they wanted to and were weak.
The next place they went to was when the bird dropped David in the sea and a fish swallowed him. Then when a bigger fish came by it scared the fish that had David and David asked the fish if he could spit him out. The fish said yes because then he can swim faster. David started getting hungry while he was walking and soon he saw a dead fish. He ate the fish because he thought it was okay since the fish was already dead.
Then the bird took David to a place where he saw people on horseback with whips and other people in chains heading toward a cave. David knew the people were slaves and that the men on horseback were forcing them to work with pickaxes in the cave. David went to another cave so he would be safe and found an old man. He said that he escaped from being a slave and was a free man. At first he was scared to go outside and let the men on horseback find him but then he was brave and was never bothered again.
Finally the last place the huge bird took him was a regular village. There he met a woman who gave him food. Then the woman showed him how to be a shepherd. Also he met a dog named King. King was a very special dog. David was also in school now. Eventually king died and the woman got a new dog but David will never forget King. Now the huge bird took David to his grandfather. The grandfather told him that his parents were ashamed for treating you badly in the past so they took up stealing but now they gave up and are home anxiously waiting for you. With that David went home.
